The Lady in White (Sakura) Concept Art
“Eclipse night” was a project in which I had to create a short story while both choosing its medium (like a movie, book, game) and incorporating at least one manifestation of Brazilian culture. My choice of medium was animation, and I searched various brazilian myths and stories to incorporate and reference in my narrative.
“Eclipse night” is, therefore, a brief story of how two souls, metaphorically the Sun and the Moon, meet in a dark gloomy night. As this is a direct sequence of the events from “The Play and The Star”, Aster remains the main character, meeting an alternative version of Sakura (you can read more about them here). In this story, a wounded Aster needs to survive the fierce persecution of his enemies while in a forest at night. In his flee, he eventually crosses paths with a mysterious and magical lady in white. The script is currently only written in portuguese.
My inspirations and mentions of Brazilian culture were the myths and folklore legends of "Anhangá", "Boitatá", "Iara", "Mãe-de-Lua" (the Urutau bird), "Vitória-Régia" (Water lily) and "A Origem do Rio Solimões” (“The Origin of Solimões River"). There are also references to the work of Machado de Assis, through quotes of both "Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas" ("The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas") and "Dom Casmurro". Lastly, Aster directly quotes some lines of the poem "O Amor do Sol pela Lua" (“The Love of the Sun for the moon”) by Estêvão Xavier.
As visual representations of the story, I developed the concept art for both Aster and the Lady in White. Afterwards, I also structured a storyboard for a section of the plot (considering this is supposed to be an animation concept project), where the two meet.
